Statements

· Sex education will not be treated as a separate subject but will be incorporated into a continuing programme of social and personal development within both the Science Curriculum and the Religious Education Curriculum.

· The sex education programme will reflect the school ethos and demonstrate and encourage the following values:- respect for self, respect for others, responsibility for their own action and responsibility towards their family, friends, school and wider community

· Science and religious education are an integral part of the programme for personal and social development of which sex education will form a part.   

· Different aspects of the programme will be introduced at times appropriate to the ages and understanding of the children.

· Pupils will learn about the different parts of the human body and their functions
and how to keep healthy and safe

· Pupils will develop an understanding of attitudes and feelings about themselves

· Individuals from other professions may be invited to come into school at certain stages to contribute their knowledge and skills - these visits to be overseen by the co-ordinator.

· Questions will be answered simply and clearly. The teacher will be mindful of the child’s different culture, background, age and understanding and will have considered strategies for dealing with questions beforehand and discussed them with the person responsible.

· Although we do not feel that sexually transmitted diseases/HIV/Aids are part of the core curriculum at this stage, teachers will be prepared to deal sensitively with any queries which arise

· All pupils will be offered equal access to the sex/health education curriculum.
